Nandalike is a small hamlet near Udupi, closer to Belmannu in Udupi Taluk. This is the birth-place of Nandalike Laxminarayanappa, or Muddana, the great poet who passed away in 1901, in his prime youth of 31 years. When it came to be known that Muddana was the pseudonym of none other than Nandalike Laxminarayanappa, the attention of the whole world of literature was riveted to Nandalike, and everybody was dumbfounded, caught in utter surprise. What else could they do, the people from outside? And what could be done in the Nandalike of those days? What was to help them? Who knew anything about the kinds of literary works written by Muddana? How much did they know, if they knew anything at all? Was there any survey done of his works? Were there any commentaries on them? Was there any forum to commemorate him? A commemoration building? Nothing was there? Not even one? And what changes have taken place since the 70s? What facilities were provided thereafter to the Nandalike of Muddana?
